Muhammad Ali: The Legendary Boxer and Global Icon |
Muhammad Ali,
born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr.; January 17, 1942 - American professional boxer
and public figure. A global cultural icon, widely known by his nickname
"The Greatest", he is often referred to as the greatest heavyweight
boxer of all time. He held the Ring magazine heavyweight title from 1964 to
1970 and was the undisputed champion from 1974 to 1978, and WBA and
Ring heavyweight champion from 1978 to 1979. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of
the Century by Sports Illustrated and BBC Sports Personality magazines.
Ali's place in boxing history as one of the greatest fighters of all time
is assured. His latest record of 56 wins and 5 losses with 37 knockouts is
equal to others, but the quality of his opponents and the way he dominated
during his heyday put him in a stalemate with boxing's immortals.
Clay made his professional debut on October 29, 1960, defeating Tanny
Hunsaker by a six-round decision. From then until the end of 1963, Clay
compiled a 19-0 record with 15 wins by knockout. He defeated boxers such as Tony
Esperti, Jim Robinson, Donnie Fleeman, Alonzo Johnson, George Logan, Willie
Besmanoff, LaMar Clark, Doug Jones and Henry Cooper. Clay also defeated his
former trainer and veteran boxer Archie Moore in a 1962 match.
Ali remains the only three-time lineal heavyweight champion. He is the only
boxer to be named "Fighter of the Year" by The Ring magazine six
times and has competed in more "Fight of the Year" fights in the ring
than any other fighter. He was one of three boxers named "Sportsman of the
Year" by Sports Illustrated. He was also named BBC Overseas Personality of
the Year three times.
